Protest against Assam Riots turns violent in Mumbai PDF Print E-mail

News Desk: The violence rocked Mumbai's Azad Maidan killing two people and injuring several others when a protest against Assam riots was carried out on Saturday.


The protesters torched vehicles, including media vans, and pelted stones. Police were forced to fire in the air and use batons to the disperse the unruly mob in Mumbai.


OB vans of three TV channels were also set on fire, and cameras of media persons were damaged in the attack. Two deaths were reported and 46 have been injured out of which, 36 are policemen. Several media persons have been injured.


The violence erupted at around 3:15 pm after hundreds of protesters, sporting black badges, belonging to several Muslim organisations gathered at the Azad Maidan Ground in south Mumbai on a call given by a city-based outfit, Raza Academy, an organisation which claims to work for promoting Islamic culture.


The protest was supported by other organisations like Sunni Jamaitul Ulma and Jamate Raza-e-Mustafa. However, media and police became the target in the attack.


The situation has been brought under control, police said, The cause of the violence is being probed.

Reacting to the unrest, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi appealed for peace.
