Bhubaneswar: Former President APJ Abdul Kalam inaugurated the Children Science Congress on the sidelines of the 99th Indian Science Congress at KIIT campus in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday.

Addressing the delegates, the Missile man appealed the school children, who participated in the Indian Science Congress (ISC), to be unique and work dedicatedly in the field of science and technology.

Dr Kalam appealed the students to make their homes free from corruption to build a bright future. When asked the questions how he managed to balance science and politics when he was the President of India, he said, "Science needs lots of money and money comes from politicians".

He deliberately stressed on the advantages of science and technology. Several questions he faced like why India is spending a lot of money on missiles and other defence programmes while most of the people in the country are sleeping on empty stomachs.

He replied to all the questions with justified answers but in indirect way. He said, "I personally feel science is for people who have the capacity to do that, and you can select science or humanities".

Replying to the questions on science, space and missile technology, he said, "Earth, Moon and Mars will become economic entity in next three decades and we will be seeking lot of things from there".

More than 15,000 delegates including scientists and students are participating in the programme, which is being held from January 3 to 7 at the KIIT campus.

The 99th edition of Indian Science Congress was inaugurated by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on Tuesday.
