Puri: With the growing number of rape cases in Odisha, the women in the state are found to be unsafe. Recently, a 15-year-old girl was allegedly raped and burnt in Puri district.


The incident occurred at Sahanikera, about 15 km from Puri. Police have arrested a 20-year-old man for raping the girl and setting her on fire. The girl's family accused that the accused Rasmiranjan Jena alias Milu first raped Gayatri and then set her on fire on Thursday night.


The girl's mother alleged that Milu resides close to their house. He had called Gayatri outside. After some time, she found that her daughter was severly burnt.


The victim was rushed to a hospital nearby and then shifted to the district headquarters hospital in Puri on Friday.  


Police suspected that the incident is out of the love affairs between two. According to preliminary investigation, the accused and victim loved each other. They might have break up or fallout.


Police said that they are verifying the allegations made by the family members of the girl. The victim told that she was raped and burnt. However, police said that it is difficult to establish whether she was raped as she was burnt severely.
