News Desk: Breaking News! The Cholera epidemic struck the KBK (Koraput-Balangir-Kalahandi) districts in Orissa, taking the death toll to 86 since January 2010. During last eight months 3,727 were suffered from diarrhea.

Rayagada district is the worst-affected with 37 deaths from diarrhoea and related ailments, which were later confirmed as Cholera. Nuapada district also reported 27 deaths. Among other KBK districts, Nabarangpur recorded 10 deaths, followed by Malkangiri (8), and Kalahandi (4).

Some non-KBK districts such as Keonjhar (10), Ganjam (9) and Dhenkanal (1) also reported diarrhea deaths.

Cholera and Diarrhea ailments in Orissa have been attributed to unhygienic living conditions and consumption of contaminated water from stream and nallas.

The state government has dispatched medical teams to all affected areas. Two doctors from Balangir were put under suspension after they refused to go to worst-affected Rayagada district.
