New Delhi: In a big relief to the UPA government, the amendments on the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) moved by oppositions were defeated in Lok Sabha and the government finally won after division of votes.

The Trinamool Congress, which has been opposing the NCTC, abstained along with the BSP during the voting. The Samajwadi Party (SP) voted with the government withdrawing its motion to win the government.

The amendments were moved by the BJP, Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and the Left Front on the President's Address on Monday.

Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj had moved the motion on the NCTC. While 141 MPs voted in favour of the amendment, 226 voted against it.

The TMC lent its support to the government in defeating the amendments as its MPs walked out of the House. The BSP members also abstained from the voting. TMC chief Mamata Banerjee said that her party opposes the NCTC, but it does not want to embarrass the government.

The second amendment motion was moved by the CPI-M member Basudeb Acharia, which was also defeated. The BJD moved the third motion and it met the same fate.
