Kerala: Senior CPI(M) leader Prakash Karat was re-elected as the party's General Secretary for the third consecutive term at party's 20th Congress in Kozhikode on Monday.

The veteran was first elected as party's General Secretary at the New Delhi Congress in 2005. Later, he was re-elected at Coimbatore for the second term.

The party, which suffered in West Bengal and Kerala polls last year, also elected a 15-member politburo.

Reviewing the last year assembly polls debacle, new faces have been included in the politburo including CITU national president A K Padmanabhan, West Bengal opposition leader Suryakanta Mishra and former Kerala education minister MA Baby.

While former Kerala Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan failed to be reinstated in the politburo, West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has been retained.

The new politburo was announced by Karat on the conclusion of the six-day meet in Kerala.
