Breaking News! In a blow to former Lok Sabha Speaker PA Sangma, the nomination of Pranab Mukherjee as Presidential candidature was accepted today despite the objection of several opposition parties.
Pranab had landed in a trouble when his close rival Sangma filed a petition seeking cancellation of his nomination on grounds of holding an office of profit.
Sangma claimed that the UPA candidate Paranb was holding an office of profit as the Chairman of Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) in Kolkata and has not yet resigned from the post.
However, the ISI denied the claim saying Pranab had resigned as the chairman of the institute on June 20. Even he did not take any remuneration after he quit the honourary post, it added.
Pranab responded to the objection today to the returning officer for the President poll, which will be held on July 19. The returning officer said that the objection raised is factually incorrect as Pranab has quit his position as the Chairman of ISI before he resigned as the Finance Minister.
Meanwhile, Sangma's nomination for president poll has also been accepted by the returning officer. There would be close competition between two candidates. While one is the UPA's nominee, Sangma enjoys support of BJP, BJD, and AIADMK.
