London: According to a research study conducted by the University of Sydney, saffron in food, will help in improving vision and keep it sharp. Professor Silvia Bisti said that the patients' vision improved after taking the saffron pill.

The study, published on 'The Daily Mail' said that saffron minimises the impact of age-related macular degeneration, or AMD, the most common cause of blindness in old people.

Saffron has multiple benefits and has been used in traditional medicines for centuries. It can cure several ailments. The researchers carried out the tests in Italy. The product is widely used in Indian and Spanish kitchens.

The experts are now exploring possibilities of saffron treating the genetic eye diseases, which may help people avoid blindness in old age.

1. Most Paella or Chicken Korma is coloured with cheaper Turmeric than the terribly expensive Saffron (worth more than gold, weight-by-weight). While Turmeric also has medicinal value, whether the beneficial impact on vision is possible, is not proven (AFAIK)
2. The research does not say if cooking Saffron (heating to high temperatures) destroys or evapotrates the usually lighter, aromatic oils that might contain the anti-oxidants
