Sports Desk: The first Swimming race of the London Olympics produced the most shocking result, as defending champion and eight-time Olympic gold medalist in Beijing finished fourth and failed the podium finish.

American swimmer Ryan Lochte won the men’s 400-meter individual medley (4:05.18). Brazil’s Thiago Pereira won the silver medal (4:08.86), while Japan’s Kosuke Hagino got the bronze (4:08.94).

Phelps had narrowly qualified for the finals, but it was expected that he would rise to the occasion and repeat his Beijing feat, which did not happen.

Meanwhile, the first world record in Swimming at the London Olympics was created last night. China's Ye Shiwen clocked 4:28.43 seconds to break the four-year-old record (4:29.45) set by Australian Stephanie Rice and won the gold medal in women's 400-meter individual medley.

In Archery, Im Dong-Hyun, a "legally blind" man, combined with Kim Bub-min and Oh Jin-hyek to break the record for 216 arrows with a score of 2087 in the team event. He had won gold in the team event at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics.
