Sania Mirza out of Women's Doubles, Vijender Wins PDF Print E-mail

Sports Desk: Sania Mirza and Rushmi Chakravarthi crashed out of the Women's Doubles at London Olympics. The duo lost to Hia Jung Chuang and Su Wei Hsieh of Taipei in three sets.

 

Saina and Rushmi lost the first set 1-6. They bounced back to win the second set 6-3. But the Taipei pair dominated the third set and took it 6-1 to seal the match in their favour.



In Badminton, Women's Doubles, wala Gutta and Ashwini Ponappa lost their opening group match to the Japanese duo of Mizuki Fujii and Reika Kakiiwa. They lost 16-21, 18-21 in 45 minutes.

 

In Weightlifting, Soniya Chanu finished a dismal seventh with a total weight of 171 kg - below her personal best. he managed 74Kgs in snatch and 97Kgs in clean and jerk.


In Table Tennis, 19-year-old Soumyajit Ghosh prevailed over Brazil's Gustavo Tsuboi 11-9, 14-12, 7-11, 12-10, 5-11, 12-0 (4-2). He moved into the second round.

After Shiva Thapa's dismal show yesterday, India have something to cheer in Boxing, as favourite Vijender Singh defeated Kazakhstan's Danabek Sukhanov 14-10 to move into the pre-quarterfinals of middleweight (75kg) event.
