News Desk: In a huge setback for India, boxer Vikas Krishan was ousted from the Olympics following a review of the result of his pre-quarterfinal bout by the International Boxing Association (AIBA).

The 20-year-old had won 13-11 over Errol Spence in a thrilling contest last night. However, the association awarded the bout 15-13 to the American following an appeal by his rival's team management.


The Indian boxer has committed a total of nine holding fouls in the third round. However, the Referee only gave one caution, the AIBA said in a statement following a review by the jury.


"In the second round, at the time 02:38, the boxer from India spitted out his gumshield intentionally. However the Referee didn't give any warning," it added.

"Based on the AIBA Technical & Competition Rules 12.1.9, the Referee should have given at least two (2) warnings to the Indian boxer. Although the boxer from India intentionally spitted out his gumshield, the Referee's view was blocked by the boxer from the USA and was not able to see the action," it international body said.


However, it can be said that decision to oust the Indian boxer was taken under the American pressure.


Vikas was the only second Indian boxer after Vijender to fetch a bronze medal in the World Championship. He could have brought more glory for the country in the London Olympics.

 

Earlier, Sumit Sangwan was denied a victory under controversial circumstances. In his case, India was not allowed to challenge the decision taken by five independent judges at the AIBA, but in Vikas case, the US team was allowed to appeal against the judges' decision.
