BSNL launches India's first Mobile WiMAX Service PDF Print E-mail

New Delhi: Breaking News! The state-owned telecom company, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) has launched the country's first Mobile WiMAX service in Kerala. Kerala became the first state in urban India to fourth generation Internet access network.

 

Union minister of state for Agriculture and Consumer Affairs and Ernakulam MP, K V Thomas, launched the facility at a function in Thiruvananthapuram. BSNL's WiMAX service is powered by AVIAT, formerly Harris Stratex.

 

WiMAX stands for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access technology, which can provide a speed of up to 37 Mbps data transfer.

 

In the first phase, 50 BTS would be set up to cover all major cities, all district headquarters and important towns in Kerala. The project will cost Rs 100 crore. The second phase will witness another 450 BTS, which would be commissioned to cover remaining towns and all imporatnt locations.
