News Desk: Free photo sharing site Instagram hit 50 million registered users with 5 million of them in just six days. The service had been acquired by Facebook for $1 billion just few days before.

On April 1st, Instagram had 30 million users and it hit 40 million registered members on April 13. Fox289 was the app's 50 millionth user but no pictures have been uploaded to the profile yet.

Instagram is used mainly on iphones. The Android application crossed 10 million download mark two days ago, which can be accounted as an incredible growth for a one month old app.

Instagram is a free photo sharing service launched in October 2010 that allows users to take a photo, apply a digital filter to it which can improve and enhance the images and then share it on a variety of social networking services.

When Facebook was on its way to buy Instagram with a huge amount of $1 billion many were at first questioning the reason why Facebook decided to buy the service. But now they are convinced about the motive. Facebook was too clever to acquire a future competitor early enough.
