Do Cosmetics damage our Skin? PDF Print E-mail

By Triveni Sharma: Most people use an array of cosmetics every day.  Cosmetics generally contain a blend of some of the following ingredients like water, emulsifiers, preservatives, thickeners, colors, fragrances, pH stabilizers, and various active ingredients to carry out the product’s intended purpose.

Simple cosmetics like soap may have a mixture of fragrances, detergents, colors and essential oils that can damage our skin. Studies have shown that every one of us has a buildup of most of the harsh ingredients inside of us just from using everyday products like shampoo, cosmetics and a wide range of skin care products.

Certain oils in many cosmetics can cause or deteriorate acne. This type of acne, aptly called acne cosmetica, is gentle, frequent and characterized by blocked pores and reddened bumps on the chin, cheeks and forehead.

Acne cosmetica occurs when oils from the makeup collect in and congest our pores, so thick liquid or cream products are more often culprits than are lighter products like powders.

According to a recent study, the average female uses up to 20 different skincare products per day. This adds up to an exceptional amount of makeup and skincare product use per year. This is on the whole motivating due to the fact that most of these products contain a large helping of chemicals.

Thus, these chemicals are engrossed through the skin result in diverse skin problems and ageing issues. While some chemicals that are contained within skin care and makeup products might be ok to use on their own, there’s no telling when these products might do once they are mixed.

To help avoid these reactions, look for makeup products that are fragrance- and oil-free -- these ingredients are typically the most irritating to the skin. Use organic makeup which provides natural sun-filters, long-lasting colors and healthy looking radiant glow. As this kind of makeup products contain any synthetic colors, artificial fragrance and petro chemicals that damage our skin.

Also, look for products that are labeled hypoallergenic (they're less likely to cause allergic reactions), noncomedogenic (they won't block pores) and nonacnegenic (they won't cause acne); although none of those terms are necessarily regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

If you find that you develop any kind of reaction after you begin using a new makeup product, it's probably a good idea to stop using that particular product. But with a good skin care routine and quality makeup products, you can help prevent negative reactions.
