News Desk: The protests spread across Afghanistan for the second day against NATO troops over the burning of the sacred Koran. The protesters staged demonstrations, pelted stones, shouted anti-American slogans.

Hundreds of protesters threw stones at a US military base in Kabul and more than a thousand blocked the highway in the eastern city of Jalalabad shouting "Death to Americans, Death to Obama".

The protests erupted on Tuesday in Kabul and outside the US-run Bagram military base on basis of a report that the NATO troops had burnt copies of Koran.

The report against Islam provoked violent protests across the country. The furious Afghans attacked anti-riot police on Tuesday. The US troops fired in the air disperse the crowd.

Hundreds of University students took their protests to the streets saying they cannot tolerate insults to the scared religion of Islam.

However, the US commander in Afghanistan General John Allen apologised and ordered a probe into the incident. The troops had reportedly disposed of a large number of Islamic religious materials including Koran.

He said that the troops would be given proper training in handling the religious materials. He admitted that the Korans have been burnt inadvertently at Bagram airfield.
