News Desk: Pakistani doctor, Shakil Afridi, who reportedly helped the CIA to hunt down Al Qaeda chief Osama Bin Laden, was sentenced to 33 years in jail on treason charges.

Under the British-era tribal laws, Frontier Crimes Regulations (FCR), Shakil was held guilty. The FCR is still effective in Pakistan's tribal regions.

The Pakistani doctor allegedly ran a CIA-sponsored fake vaccine programme in Abbottabad to obtain DNA samples from any of Osama's family members who stayed in the same compound.

A Commission appointed by the Pakistan Government had sought Afridi's trial on charges of high treason.
