News Desk: The trouble-torn Egypt got a new President, as hardliner Mohamed Morsy of the Muslim Brotherhood party defeated former Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq to take over the reign of the country.
Morsy secured 51.7 per cent of the total votes, while his rival Shafiq got 48.3 per cent of votes. The contest was close, but Morsy had the last laugh, opening a new chapter in Egypt's post-Mubarak era.
Mohamed Morsy's supporters thronged to the Tahrir Square in Cairo to celebrate his victory. The moderate Islamists were disappointed, as the hardliners won the polls. |
