News Desk: Pakistan Supreme Court has put the pressure on the new Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf asking him to reopen the graft cases against President Asif Ali Zardari.
The apex court asked Ashraf to respond to its order by July 12 over the reopening of graft cases in Switzerland against Zardari, an issue ousted his predecessor this month.
A three-judge bench headed by Justice Nasir-ul-Mulk reminded Attorney General Irfan Qadir that former PM Yousuf Raza Gilani had been convicted for contempt of court and given a symbolic sentence for refusing to reopen the graft cases against Zardari.
Ashraf took over the charge as the Prime Minister after Gilani was disqualified by the apex court on June 19 following his conviction for contempt.
Even though Gilani clarified why the government could not act on the court's directives as the President enjoyed immunity in Pakistan and abroad, the apex court took a strong action and ousted him from the post of PM.
However, after assuming the office, Ashraf made it clear that he would not write a letter to Swiss authorities to reopen the cases against Zardari showing the same reason that Gilani had said.
He again had made it clear that the PPP government does not want any confrontation with other institutions. He assured that he will work in accordance with the Constitution and Law.
